How Intentional Moments Create Connection — Even From Far Away

How Intentional Moments Create Connection — Even From Far Away

Introduction

When you’re a long-distance grandparent, it can sometimes feel like the relationship is limited by the distance between you. But the truth is, distance simply changes the way connection happens. 💛

Instead of everyday moments, long-distance grandparents can create something different — intentional moments that stand out.

Those small, thoughtful moments can become some of the most memorable parts of a child’s relationship with you.

In this video, I’m sharing why intention matters so much in long-distance grandparenting and how creating small, meaningful moments can help bridge the distance between you and your grandchild.

Because children don’t remember how far away you lived.

They remember how it felt to spend time with you.

INTRODUCTION

Most grandparents imagine the ideal relationship with their grandchildren happening like this:

Living nearby.
Dropping in for quick visits.
Being part of everyday life.

And when we don’t have that… it’s easy to feel like something important is missing.

Not living near my grandson, I’ve realized through my own journey…

When you’re a long-distance grandparent, you’re not just doing the same relationship from farther away.

You’re actually in a different role entirely.

Even though we can’t control the distance, if we think about it, it is a role that we can control in important ways.

And that role can open the door to some surprisingly special moments.

RECOGNIZING THE DIFFERENT PLACE WE'RE IN

When we don’t live nearby, we can’t rely on everyday moments.

We don’t see the soccer games and we can’t help with school pickups.

But that doesn’t mean we make less of an impact.

It simply means we have to be intentional in a different way.

Instead of sharing the everyday time, we create distinct moments of connection.

And children notice those.

They feel the effort.

They feel your attention, even when you’re not in the same room.

CREATING MEMORABLE ENGAGEMENT

Distance invites creativity.

Instead of letting distance become a barrier, we can use it as an invitation to do things a little differently.

Maybe that means:

  • surprising them with on the way to school audio messages just for them

  • having a special greeting every time you call

  • mailing a tiny object that becomes part of your next story

  • creating little rituals they associate only with you

The good thing is that these are actually the types of moments that stand out.

And when something stands out to a child… it creates memories for them.

BRIDGING THE DISTANCE

When you show up consistently…
when you create little traditions…
when you make your time together feel special…

Distance becomes just one part of your shared story.

Not the defining part.

When they think of you, your grandchildren aren’t going to think about how far away you live.

They’re going to remember the small traditions you share. How you laughed together on your last FaceTime call. How they can feel your love because you show up for them, even over Zoom.

TINY RITUALS / CLOSING

That’s why I’ve been talking so much lately about tiny rituals.

Because those small repeated moments — your special greeting, your storytime rhythm, the countdown hug we talked about earlier this week — become little bridges across the distance.

They turn our separate places into shared experiences.

And over time, the layers of those shared experiences create and build that special relationship that we so long to have with our grandchildren.

If you haven’t tried my Teeny Tiny Stories, I will include the link in the description below. These are fun, rhyming 1-2 sentence stories you can easily send to your grandchildren. For instance, a tiny heart story in the shape of a heart…and there’s also a Moon and Star stories included with these free printables…sort of a starter pack for a tiny tradition that just may become a favorite with your grandkids. I hope you’ll give them a try!
