INTRODUCTION

If you’re a long-distance grandparent…we focus a lot on video calls. We want to SEE them and TALK to them, and that is so important. But, have you ever noticed how excited kids get when something arrives just for them in the mail?

It doesn’t have to be expensive.
It doesn’t have to be elaborate.

Sometimes the tiniest things become the things they remember forever.

There’s just something different about mail. Think about it for a moment.

A note they can hold.
A silly surprise they weren’t expecting.
A photo they can look at again and again.

And in a world where so much disappears off a screen…
mail stays.

Maybe it ends up in a place of honor on their bedroom wall…
tucked into a drawer that they go into often…or into a special treasures box…or saved so they have it long after we even remember sending it.

So, of course, I have some Mailbox Magic ideas for you that, despite how easy they are to do, I think you will find they have the potential to make a big impact.

IDEA #1: QR CODE MESSAGE IN HANDWRITTEN LETTER

One idea I absolutely love is including a QR code with a whispered message from you inside a handwritten letter. I used the QR codes idea with my grandson and it was a hit, so you should definitely try this!

When they scan it…
they hear your voice…and will have this to listen to whenever they want.

It could be:
“I love you.”
A bedtime message…prayer you can say together
An inside joke.
A whispered secret message or a little song you sing to them. So many options that all say
“I was thinking about you today.”

IDEA #2: THREE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT YOU

Here’s another simple but very meaningful idea…

It’s always a wonderful thing to tell your grandkids what it is you love about them…it makes them feel good about themselves and helps build confidence. So, you can very simply tell them “Five Things I Love About You”

You can make this surprising and fun by turning it into a little heart paper chain they can hang in their room.

A definite keeper for them, and your words let them know how special they are and encourage them to do more with the qualities you may call out in your note like being kind and thoughtful.

IDEA #3: SECRET MISSION

The third idea I’ll share with you today is so fun. Send a “You’ve Been Chosen for a Secret Mission” letter written in invisible ink.

I found this invisible ink pen set…inexpensive and comes with UV light keychains so they can decode the mission and even write back to you.

Suddenly the mailbox becomes an adventure.

Secret Missions may be to give Mommy and Daddy a big huge hug from Grammy and do something kind for them. Whatever you decide, I’m sure it will be a hit!

IDEA #4: COLORFUL MUSTACHES

Last idea! And honestly… sometimes kids just need completely random mail.

Kids love stickers and they love to dress up…how about something silly like an assortment of colorful mustaches just for fun.

Save some for yourself and you have a fun way to engage with them on your next video call.
